Newcastle City Council has awarded 1233 ABC Newcastle the City of Newcastle Medal for distinguished community service, six weeks after the storms and flooding that devastated parts of the Hunter Valley.
At a ceremony last night at Newcastle City Hall, the Lord Mayor John Tate praised 1233 for maintaining emergency broadcast mode for four days, describing it as "a lifeline and a comfort to people throughout the Hunter Region".
this prestigious award belongs to the whole community of Newcastle and the Hunter for supporting and nurturing one another in a time of great need
"The efforts of all staff at 1233 went well beyond normal duties and demonstrated genuine care and support for the Hunter community as a public broadcaster," Mr Tate said.
"The City of Newcastle Medal is awarded to individuals, organisations or groups for distinguished service of a high degree to Newcastle, and its citizens as a whole and the staff at ABC certainly meet this criteria."
Youtube and now its the turn of Myspace
Federal election only months away and it’s hotting up in cyberspace with both political leaders trying to engage the electorate.
The two major candidates are vying to become the next Australian leader and have traded barbs on cyberspace ahead of the federal election.
This begs the question, can we use Myspace’s own polling system ‘Number of Friends’ as a possible predictor of how the boys are going to do in the election?
Thursday’s Myspace polling results:
John Howard has 12237 friends
Kevin Rudd has 7289 friends
At the moment, John Howard is getting a boost in the Myspace polls, but will this translate in to real votes on the day?

After the deluge, comes the snow.
Despite devastating floods and storms over the past 10 days, farmers in the Hunter Valley have still welcomed further moisture overnight.
More than 200 millimetres of rain had fallen in most parts of the Hunter but until last night very little was received in the catchment of Glenbawn Dam, the region’s main water storage.
This morning though, farmers walked out onto a carpet of snow on land as low as 400 metres, a one in 10 year event for Ben Cielo of Stuarts Brook.
"It’s about 15 to 20 millimetres thick down here," he said.
"Everything’s white, except under the trees. It’s clear, it’s great.
"The more moisture we can get in the ground. It’s just such a relief to look out and see this as a vast change of weather to what we had six months ago."

The Newcastle Regional Art Gallery in New South Wales’ Hunter region has had its operating budget reinstated, but the city council may have to tighten its purse strings to meet the cost.
Residents packed the council chambers last night concerned about a recent decision to cut $200,000 from the gallery’s annual budget.
But councillors last night agreed to reinstate the funding.
Newcastle Lord Mayor John Tate says council now has to work out how to find the extra money.
"We’ll find it through efficiency gains. In the budget management plan for the coming financial year we gave a clear indication that we would be striving for improved efficiency gains, that’s an ongoing program and out of that I expect we can fund it," he said.

NEWCASTLE captain Danny Buderus has hit breaking point.
Buderus will miss Newcastle’s crucial game against Sydney Roosters at EnergyAustralia Stadium on Saturday night after sustaining a grade-one medial ligament tear in his left knee in the Knights’ 44-0 loss to Melbourne at Olympic Park on Monday night.
He might also miss the trip to Auckland for the game against the Warriors the following Saturday.
Buderus desperately needs a rest to relieve chronic Achilles tendonitis in both legs, so the knee injury could prove a blessing in disguise.

KNIGHTS great Andrew Johns yesterday attacked the credibility of South Sydney coach Jason Taylor over his claims that rival Michael Hagan had departed Newcastle for Parramatta leaving the club in a state of disarray.
Responding to the extraordinary post-match outburst on Sunday – where Taylor told Hagan he’d "f…ed up Newcastle" – Johns said the Rabbitohs coach was off the mark about Hagan’s impact on the Knights.
"He won a premiership at the club and if you have a look at players like myself, Ben Kennedy, Danny Buderus . . . when did we play our best footy? It was under his coaching," Johns said.
"I’m not sure where JT (Taylor) is coming from having a crack over something he obviously doesn’t know too much about."
Taylor let fly at his coaching rival on Sunday, saying: "How f….. are you. Brian Smith’s rebuilding what you f….. up (in Newcastle)."
Hagan claimed yesterday he hadn’t fully heard the comments directed at him after the pair had crossed paths following the game.
Its official…Australian politics has gone Web 2.0

CASEY Stoner (of Kurri Kurri) thought he was ice-skating, not bike racing, as he salvaged fifth place to dramatically extend his control of the MotoGP world championship at the German Grand Prix.
Stoner went into damage-control when he feared the rear tyre on his Ducati would disintegrate in the heat wave at the twisting Sachsenring circuit. But as he struggled, Valentino Rossi crashed out of the race and dropped further behind in the points chase.
Race winner Dani Pedrosa ended a year-long Honda losing streak, while Stoner’s teammate, Loris Capirossi, finished second with a softer-compound tyre.
America’s defending world champion, Nicky Hayden, returned to form to finish third.
Stoner slipped from second to fifth over the final 10 laps as he held off Marco Melandri in sixth.
The Australian extended his points lead to 32 over an angry Rossi after 10 of 18 rounds. Pedrosa was still in third place, 52 points adrift.
"It was worse than an ice rink," said Stoner after he fought to control his bike, which was fitted with an unsuitable compound tyre for the 50-degree track temperatures.

Melbourne veteran Matt Geyer turned back the clock as the Storm maintained their NRL competition lead with a crushing 44-0 win over Newcastle at Olympic Park.
With Billy Slater, Steve Turner and former Knight Anthony Quinn all collecting doubles, the home side ran in nine unanswered tries, with 31-year-old Geyer, the only player remaining from the club’s 1999 premiership, setting up three.
The victory extended the Storm’s winning streak to six and maintained their four-point lead over Manly at the top of the competition table while it ended the Knights’ three-match Monday night roll.
With superstar Greg Inglis sidelined with a knee injury, Geyer proved a more than capable replacement, although he had plenty of back-up.
Test incumbent Cameron Smith won the battle of the code’s best hookers over Knights skipper Danny Buderus, who appeared to be hampered by his ongoing Achilles problems.
The Queensland rake set up two tries, the second scored by centre Matt King 12 minutes into the second half after Smith put a neat little grubber into the in-goal.
