Emirates Park is the latest Hunter Valley stud to be hit by the equine influenza (EI) outbreak.

Darley Australia confirmed earlier it had three yearlings test positive to EI despite implementing strict biosecurity protocols and restricting the movement of people and horses since August 26.

Emirates Park, owned by the Dubai-based His Excellency Nassar Lootah, confirmed two horses at its Murrurundi property had the highly contagious virus.

Both studs said it was clear the current system of containment was not working.

A 77th-minute goal from Matt Thompson handed Newcastle Jets a 1-0 victory over the Phoenix in their round three A-League match at Westpac Stadium in Wellington on Sunday afternoon.

Thompson found the back of net when his free kick gained a deflection off Adam Griffiths, giving the Jets their first victory of the season.

They entered the encounter on the back of two draws and their triumph will see them move up to second place on the A-League ladder behind runaway leaders Central Coast Mariners.

The Phoenix, the A-league’s new kid on the block, are still without a win after three rounds and remain grounded on the bottom of the ladder.

In a scoreless first half, the two sides both had a series of shots on target but goalkeepers Glen Moss (Phoenix) and Ante Covic (Jets) were both more than equal to the task.

The second term again saw several scoring opportunities wasted before Thompson’s effort put the visitors in charge in the late stages of the match.

The Jets will look to close the gap on the undefeated Mariners when they host Adelaide United on Saturday while the Phoenix continue the search for a maiden win when they face Sydney FC away on Friday night.

Newcastle has finally found something to smile about with gun youngster Jarrod Mullen extending his stay at the under siege NRL club through to the end of the 2011 season.

Mullen’s long-term commitment should provide a shot in the arm for the Knights following a season on and off the field they would rather forget.

"Obviously, as times have been a bit tough recently, it’s great to have good news like this," Knights senior executive officer Steve Burraston said.

"We’ve got the young bloke with us for the next four years which I can only see as a positive for everyone."

Mullen’s season was brought to a premature end after he was forced to undergo shoulder surgery in late July.

AUSTRALIA’S $3 billion thoroughbred breeding industry was officially in crisis last night with confirmation yesterday that leading Hunter Valley broodmare farm Segenhoe Stud had three cases of equine influenza.

John Messara, chairman of the Thoroughbred Breeders Association, said yesterday the outbreak at two properties in the Hunter Valley was potentially lethal for an industry already on its knees.

"We worked out today that if none of the walk-in mares are able to be served in NSW this season, that would be just under $1 billion worth of horses that will not be born and not be sold," a deflated Messara said. "It’s hard to see how we would ever recover. If this gets into our foals, it could get even worse as there is a reported mortality rate of up to 40 per cent for infected foals. The effects could be felt for years as our stocks could be depleted in numbers and quality to the point that the (racing) carnivals will not be worth having."

THE real reason the Australian Rugby Union refused to back Andrew Johns’ planned code switch in 2004 has finally been revealed, with former senior official Brett Robinson confirming yesterday the ARU had been made aware of the rugby league star’s drug-taking.

Robinson, then the ARU’s high performance unit manager, was pilloried in the media after recommending Australian rugby not chase Johns, who was touted as the man to turn around the fortunes of the NSW Waratahs.

At the time, Robinson defended his stance on the grounds that there were doubts about Johns’ age, injury profile and his ability to make the transition – all reasons that were made to look lame the following year when the Newcastle Knights superstar masterminded NSW’s stunning revival in the State of Origin series.

Johns’ manager John Fordham particularly was scathing in his criticism of Robinson.

"I wonder if Brett has had a rethink about Joey following his super-human, match-winning effort in Origin II," Fordham said in June, 2005.

He went on to say Steve Larkham, who was born in the same month and year as Johns, earned a new contract despite his injuries.

Very few rugby league and anti-drug agency officials are emerging with any credibility from the daily revelations of just how widely and for how long the alcohol and drugs problems facing Andrew Johns have been known.

It seems that just about every official and player either knew or had an idea, but with just one exception, didn’t want to know and therefore did nothing about it.

After four days of headlines the following have been found seriously wanting:

• The Newcastle Knights Rugby League Club.
The explanations from Knights officials have been woefully inadequate. The club has long had the weakest drug testing regime in the NRL. Johns knew that, and he knew that his chances of being caught were minimal.

WINNERS are hard to find in the A-League, but both the Newcastle Jets and Queensland Roar will gain encouragement from an entertaining draw at EnergyAustralia Stadium yesterday.

After two rounds and eight matches only table-toppers Central Coast Mariners have tasted victory. The other six games have all ended in draws.

But while the Jets in particular will be disappointed not to have taken full points against a Queensland side which had to survive the last nine minutes with 10 men, the fact that nobody lost is the more pertinent point.

Every team in the competition will still believe they have a chance of tasting success.

Strangely, the weight of history was against Newcastle, for Queensland had won on their three previous visits to the Hunter.

And with just minutes left on the clock, that statistic looked as though it would remain intact.

After huffing and puffing with long periods of good possession, the Roar finally broke the deadlock.

Casey Stoner’s third successive victory put him on the brink of a claiming a maiden MotoGP world championship crown in Misano this afternoon.

The Australian’s eighth win in 2007 saw him extend his series lead to a massive 85-points, with Valentino Rossi suffering a nightmare in front of his home crowd when Yamaha’s new pneumatic valve engine broke down after five laps.

With just five races to go, Stoner can now clinch the world title at the Estoril GP in Portugal if he scores 15-points or more than dejected Italian Rossi on September 16.

Stoner has now led the last three races in Laguna Seca, Brno and Misano from the very first corner and hasn’t had to make one single overtake since the German GP in the Sachsenring in early July.

He comfortably won again today with a winning margin over compatriot Chris Vermeulen just shy of five seconds.
