In a first for an Australian building society, Newcastle Permanent announced today that it had sealed a $330 million bond issue deal with United States based investors.

Newcastle Permanent’s Chief Executive Officer, Stephen Porges, said the financial strength and security of Newcastle Permanent was highly attractive to US based investors in the wake of lingering problems in the US economy.

"Internationally Newcastle Permanent is now being recognised as a very safe, strong institution.

"The extremely solid credit ratings that we hold, issued by internationally recognised ratings agencies, Standard & Poor’s and Moody’s, place Newcastle Permanent on equal terms to the mainstream regional banks in Australia.

A quick internet search reveals that out of the four House of Representatives electorates that are in at least part of the Hunters boundaries three of them are held by members of the Australian Labor Party, the Member for Patterson is the sole Liberal Party member in the Hunter Valley. The seat of Charlton has been represented by a member of the ALP since 1984, the seat of Shortland since 1949 and the Newcastle seat has been a left wing stronghold since Federation.

An examination of the sitting member’s websites shows the Patterson MP is proud to announce his achievements, happily listing federal funding to the very marginal seat in recent times. Now I am sure that the ALP members have done a fantastic job of getting their fair share of funding for their local constituents but on their websites the incumbents seem to be a bit more modest in listing federal grants to their electorates.

Newcastle remained fourth.

Plenty of opportunities were created in the perfect conditions but neither side could break the dead-lock.

Mario Jardel may have earned another chance at starting for the Jets with his best performance in the A-League thus far.

NEWCASTLE are facing a battle to keep Kurt Gidley, with South Sydney to chase the representative star.

While Knights officials are expected to commence negotiations with Gidley next week, the Rabbitohs have already placed the 25-year-old – who is officially off contract at the end of 2009 but has a clause in his favour which effectively makes him a free agent at the end of next season – at the top of their hit-list for 2009, along with Parramatta’s Test and Origin fullback Jarryd Hayne.

The Rabbitohs have already expressed an interest in the Test player, and while Gidley yesterday maintained a desire to continue his career with the Knights, he did add: "This contract’s probably the most important of my career. I’ll be 26 next year and I’d like something pretty good. When you get to this point in their career, you like something long term and something pretty healthy. It’s early days, but there’s an option in my favour, which is good."

The Rabbitohs have made no secret of their desire to snare Hayne to the club for which his father, Manoa Thompson, played. What is not clear is whether the Rabbitohs would be in a position to bring both Hayne and Gidley to the club.

However, they do face an uphill task in trying to lure Gidley out of Newcastle. His manager Darryl Mather stressed he would give the Knights every opportunity to secure him long-term.

The major parties have less than three days to deliver commitments on long awaited infrastructure projects for the Hunter, the President of Hunter Business Chamber, Karen Howard said today.

The projects are the extension of the F3, the completion of the Motorway 23 (the western Newcastle bypass) and the western grandstand for the Energy Australia Stadium.

“The most important is the extension of the F3. We are losing hundreds of millions of dollars through lost business and employment opportunities that will come with that extension. We have a commitment from the Government but nothing yet from the Opposition.

While opening the health service’s inaugural Falls Injury Prevention Forum today, Hunter New England Health Acting Chief Executive Dr Nigel Lyons highlighted some startling figures.

Every day about 165 older people present to one of Hunter New England Health’s emergency departments following a fall and as many as 14 of these people die each year as a result of their fall.

"Based on projections, if we do not act on preventing the number of falls now, we will need 800 additional hospitals beds and 1200 residential aged care beds in the next 40 years in NSW. This is just to cater for the expected increase in falls events resulting from the demographic trends of an ageing population," Dr Lyons said.
