Police have arrested five people allegedly involved in a major drug supply syndicate in New South Wales.

Early this morning 50 police officers from Strike Force Emily raided houses in New Lambton, Macquarie Hills, Warners Bay and Cardiff in the Newcastle and Lake Macqaurie regions.

They arrested four people and seized drugs, $40,000 in cash and two cars.

Police allege the syndicate was supplying ice, amphetamines, ecstasy and cocaine in the Hunter Valley, mid north coast and central west regions of the state.

The arrested will all appear in court this afternoon charged with possessing and supplying drugs.

Another man was arrested at Williamtown airport.

Police allege he was one of the main ring leaders of the group.

Police say since their surveillance operation began in July last year they have made 13 arrests.

NEWCASTLE’s marquee player, Mario Jardel, has defended himself following media and public criticism of his lacklustre performances this season, saying he can’t be expected to perform miracles coming off the bench and that he only needs to start a few games to produce the goods.

Speaking through an interpreter after training yesterday, the Brazilian striker added that some Jets players who criticised him anonymously in The Newcastle Herald yesterday were being childish and that if anyone at the club had a problem with him they should approach him to talk about it.

"People who say those things are obviously frustrated. They don’t understand football. It is kids’ talk," Jardel said.

Jardel said he respected Newcastle coach Gary van Egmond, but that playing as a lone striker did not suit him.

"I have not played up front on my own," he said. "I have had people in close beside me so I can knock balls down for them and lay off. I’m not a runner."

Hunter researchers have discovered a new protein which plays a crucial role in the development of one of Australia’s biggest health problems – asthma.

Dr Joerg Mattes and colleagues from the University of Newcastle, the Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI), and the University of Freiburg in Germany, discovered high concentrations of a protein called TRAIL in the airways of asthmatics.

The research, which appears in the prestigious journal Nature Medicine, shows the inhibition of TRAIL provides protection from the development of airway inflammation and airflow obstruction, which are the hallmark features of asthma.

The Hunter’s whale and dolphin watching tourism industry is under threat due to new legislation and rules that have been introduced by the NSW national parks and wildlife’s service.

Our coastline abounds with dolphins and for a large part of the year we play host to quite significant traffic as whales migrate up and down our coastline for two thirds of the year. As they enter our territorial waters NPWS are charged with the protection of these mammals and quite sensibly we have developed protocol and rules for watching whales and dolphins.

The fact that whales for the most part are traveling through our area and do not stay around for lengthy periods (unless they do) makes it pretty easy for operators of whale watch vessels to keep a decent distance and because of their immense size (up to 60 tonnes and 60 feet long) still have an exciting encounter that many of us pay operators to experience.

Performing in front of a wild pub crowd can be confronting enough for a musician, but when that musician is 10 years old and that crowd  features a former member of one of the biggest bands in the world then you have all the ingredients for a rockin good time.

Such will be the predictament of a bunch of young performers from Rosie’s School of Rock when they take  to the stage at the Shortland Hotel on Sunday 18th November. A benefit gig will be held from midday to raise funds  for Life Without Barriers to help with restoring their Parry St. premises which was destroyed in the long weekend floods.
