What’s on the big screen?
It’s almost unheard of for a Hollywood studio to spontaneously approach a publisher for a first-time author’s book. Usually, it’s the other way around, with publishers and agents begging the studios to even take a glance.
But within a month of its release, two major movie studios have shown interest in Magdalena Ball’s debut novel and are studying the manuscript: 20th Century Fox and Anonymous Content, who did the Brad Pitt blockbuster Babel and other huge box office hits.
Then again, Sleep Before Evening is no ordinary novel. The critically acclaimed book, which Magdalena wrote by midnight oil at her home in Lake Macquarie, has received unanimous 5-star reviews for its linguistic beauty and the intensity of its plot.

Newcastle wasted little time celebrating their ticket to the A-League finals before talk in the Jets’ dressing room quickly shifted to a top two berth after their impressive win over Central Coast.
Little more than a week ago, Newcastle’s position in the top four was in jeopardy.
Now they are not only finals certainties after back-to-back wins over Adelaide and the Mariners, but are also primed for a run at the championship and possibly even the minor premiership as well.
They beat the league-leading Mariners 2-1 in Gosford on Saturday, with coach Gary van Egmond making it clear his Jets – who host bottom club Perth in the final round – were no longer happy just being in the finals mix.

Winning the battle to remove invasive bitou bush along Nobbys Beach is to enter a new stage thanks to a conservation program sponsored by Newcastle Port Corporation.
CEO, Gary Webb, said Newcastle Port Corporation was providing $22,000 in sponsorship during the next two years to enable the Hunter Branch of Conservation Volunteers Australia (CVA) to undertake the work.
Nobbys is the gateway to the port and to the Hunter Valley and it is good to see both local and international volunteers working under the CVA banner, said Gary.

The Newcastle Jets have maintained their outstanding head-to-head record against their nearest rivals the Central Coast Mariners, after the Jets won an enthralling contest 2-1 at Bluetongue Stadium in Gosford tonight. The three points also takes the Jets to the top of the Hyundai A-League table on 31 points.
The match began with a flurry of action as both teams frantically sought to gain control of the tempo of the game. In the third minute, the visitors began piling on the pressure, winning the first corner of the game. Unfortunately, nothing came of James Holland’s dead ball, but it signalled the Jets intentions to get forward early on.

Business confidence of 2007 was beginning to wane as substantial fuel cost increase and interest rates bite into margins, the President of Hunter Business Chamber, Karen Howard, said today.
“A loss of confidence will mean a drop in investment in both new jobs and equipment and that means our economy will suffer,” she said.
“Even though our region suffered from the drought and the June storms and there were increases in interest rates business people remained confident and there was investment last year. “

WHITE supremacists are plotting to use Cronulla riot-style tactics to hijack Australia Day celebrations across Sydney – including a plan to push their racist views at the sacred Anzac Cenotaph at Hyde Park.
The attempt to co-opt the war memorial to create the impression "Hitler is coming to Sydney" has disgusted veterans, with the RSL calling it an appalling slur on the memory of our Diggers.
Other rallies will be held near the scene of the Cronulla riot and in Camden to protest the construction of an Islamic school.
The far-Right groups even promote an online handbook on how to combat police and avoid detection and infiltration when holding such meetings.
In an embarrassing display of incompetence, much of the material includes warnings about the need to keep such material secret from the media.
The racist material, which condemns migrants for not being able to speak English, is riddled with spelling mistakes and poor grammar.
Much of the activity has been co-ordinated through the neo-Nazi website Stormfront, whose Australian arm is moderated by 18-year-old Newcastle resident Rhys McLean.
Mr McLean said he was aware of the plans but said it was a matter for the individual organisers, not the website.

It doesn’t get any bigger than this. The Newcastle Jets final away game of the Hyundai A-League Season 2007/08 will be played this Saturday night against fierce rivals the Central Coast Mariners.
The Mariners currently sit first on 31 points, just one point ahead of their closest rivals. Meanwhile, the Jets lie fourth on 28 points, and within striking distance of the league leaders, thanks to their dramatic 2-1 win over Adelaide United in Round 19. A win to the team from Gosford could all but tie-up the Minor Premiership, while a Jets victory could see them catapult into the top-two with only one round of action remaining.
