The biggest sponsorship deal in the 100-year history of Newcastle Surf Life Saving Club has been struck, enabling the club to grow and move closer to being an eminent player in the state and national surf life saving movement.

Hunter-based Port Waratah Coal Services (PWCS) has committed $90,000 to the club over 2008, 2009 and 2010.

The latest technology from China and clinical and imaging expertise in the Hunter have been brought together in a bid to minimise the devastating impact of stroke.

A team from Harbin Medical University (HMU) in Northern China is this week meeting with the Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI) Stroke Research Group to advance research into cooling the brain after a stroke, through a world first acute stroke research partnership between Australia and China.

The return visit to Newcastle tomorrow (Friday 15 February) by the largest cruise liner to visit the city will see a Ship Security Zone implemented from early morning.

The Mercury is scheduled to sail into the Port of Newcastle about 7am tomorrow to berth at Dyke Point because of its 263 metre length.

This week could serve as one of the biggest occasions in the long history of football in the Hunter region. A spot in the 2008 Hyundai A-League Grand Final is on the line this Sunday as the Jets take on the Queensland Roar in the Preliminary Final.

Coincidentally, this is the same stage of the competition that saw the Jets bow out of last season’s Finals Series against Adelaide United in a heartbreaking penalty shootout. This time, however, there is one significant difference; we’re on home soil.
