Outspoken Newcastle councillor Aaron Buman has today announced he will stand as an independent candidate for the federal seat of Newcastle, in New South Wales.
He faces an uphill battle to oust sitting ALP Member Sharon Grierson, who holds the seat with a margin of more than 9 per cent.
Aaron Buman was with his wife and two children at his Newcastle cafe this morning when he announced his intention to run for the seat.
He says he is confident voters understand the benefits of living in a marginal seat and is urging people in the electorate not to focus on national issues.
"Let’s see what’s in it for us. Let’s get better infrastructure, let’s get more money into the university, let’s get more money into the John Hunter [hospital]," he said.
Sharon Grierson has welcomed the challenge.
"Well Newcastle always deserves a contest, but this election is really about delivering for Newcastle," she said.
Mr Buman says he will not be doing any preference deals with other candidates.

First is Senator Bob Brown talking about the Greens as a real alternative to the two major parties and then, Greens NSW delivering a spoof of Labor’s ‘John Howard is asleep on climate change’ ad.
The ad shows John Howard and Kevin Rudd in bed together and highlights the dangers of Labor and Liberal policies on global warming.

There have been 5 interest rate rises since he made that promise at the 2004 election, and nine interest rate rises in a row. Mr Howard keeps saying working families have never been better off – is that how you feel?
Yesterday the Reserve Bank announced official interest rates to rise by a quarter of a percentage point to 6.5per cent.
In response to the news both Prime Minister John Howard and Labor leader Kevin Rudd both released video clips on Youtube. The PM trying to divert blame to state governments, while Kevin declaring his economic conservatism and highlighting monthly repayment costs on home loans.
Today Prime Minister John Howard will announce the new Defence Gap Year program and release a new television advertisement campaign for the gap year.
