Moves to redevelop Merewether Surf House will take a major step forward today with Newcastle City Council and the Department of Lands signing a Memorandum of Understanding for the future of the site.
General Manager JANET DORE says although it has been a long process to get to this stage it has been important to ensure all stakeholders are aware of their role and responsibilities in the future management of the site.
"Merewether Surf House is one of Newcastle’s most talked about beach assets. I am very pleased we have been able to consolidate the land holding and move this project forward. It is important for the community to understand that this process has been essential to ensure when we called for expressions of interest we were able to offer a commercially viable product to the market."

A climate for change – 10 Aug 2007
This week Council has been hosting a range of free events for residents to celebrate Local Government Week based around the theme: ‘a climate for change’.
The week started with the launch of the inaugural Christmas card photography competition, where members of the community have been invited to submit a photo of a Council facility with the winning entry to be used on our 2007 Christmas card. Entries close 31 August and can be submitted on Council’s website.
Local Government Week has given Council an opportunity to showcase the range of services and activities we deliver to our community. Representatives from different areas of Council – such as our engineers, mapping team, the library, Blackbutt, development approvers and more – are presenting information and advice throughout the week.

The suggestions made by former employee, Thomas Brosz, are completely rejected.
The facts are:
- Mr Brosz was employed on a part-time basis at NCC for 18 months as an Administrative Assistant.
- NCC has a strong Performance Management System in place
NCC staff are incensed that a former employee could make such statements and are offended at the inferences that they are not hard working and dedicated to their work. This has been consistently demonstrated in the results of community surveys conducted by the Hunter Valley Research Foundation over the last decade.
At its meeting of 24 July 2007 Maitland City Council granted development consent for the construction of a $120 million French-themed tourist village resort at Lochinvar.
The resort – St Helena Village – will be built adjacent to historic St Helena House and will comprise a 28 room guest house, 117 tourist accommodation units, a village square, commercial / retail areas, a recreation club, restaurant and function rooms, a village hall, chapel, day spa, pools and sporting facilities.
After months of suspense and anticipation it was announced yesterday that Newcastle has missed out on 15millon dollars from the Federal Governments Solar Cities Fund.
Out of the eleven finalists, Central Victoria was announced as the fifth and final Solar City joining Adelaide, Townsville, Alice Springs and Blacktown. Despite the initial disappointment members of the Solar Newcastle consortium are committed through the newly formed TogetherTODAY partnership to transform the Hunter into Australia’s most energy and water efficient region.
