The Newcastle Jets have maintained their outstanding head-to-head record against their nearest rivals the Central Coast Mariners, after the Jets won an enthralling contest 2-1 at Bluetongue Stadium in Gosford tonight. The three points also takes the Jets to the top of the Hyundai A-League table on 31 points.
The match began with a flurry of action as both teams frantically sought to gain control of the tempo of the game. In the third minute, the visitors began piling on the pressure, winning the first corner of the game. Unfortunately, nothing came of James Holland’s dead ball, but it signalled the Jets intentions to get forward early on.

It doesn’t get any bigger than this. The Newcastle Jets final away game of the Hyundai A-League Season 2007/08 will be played this Saturday night against fierce rivals the Central Coast Mariners.
The Mariners currently sit first on 31 points, just one point ahead of their closest rivals. Meanwhile, the Jets lie fourth on 28 points, and within striking distance of the league leaders, thanks to their dramatic 2-1 win over Adelaide United in Round 19. A win to the team from Gosford could all but tie-up the Minor Premiership, while a Jets victory could see them catapult into the top-two with only one round of action remaining.

Construction work on EnergyAustralia Stadium has commenced, with the Southern End of the Western Stand being converted. Completion of the new facilities is due in approximately July 2008.
The Newcastle Jets therefore advise all patrons that when entering the Stadium via the Main Gate (Western Entrance), direct access to the Southern Hill and Southern Corporate Areas has been effectively cut-off. For convenience, all ticket holders in the Southern area should access the Stadium through the Southern entrance for the remainder of the 2007/08 Hyundai A-League Season.

The Newcastle Jets have tonight almost certainly ended the Melbourne Victory’s hopes of defending their title with a comprehensive 3-1 win at the Telstra Dome. The Jets fought back after conceding the first goal with Denni equalising, and a second half brace to Joel Griffiths securing the Jets a valuable three points.
The first half was an entertaining affair with plenty of room in the midfield and both sides playing end-to-end attacking football. In the 5th minute, the Jets had the first opportunity of the match; with the ball bouncing around just outside the penalty area, Matt Thompson unleashed a right foot volley which sailed over the bar, never troubling Victory goalkeeper Michael Theoklitos.

This weekend’s clash may determine the future of the Newcastle Jets season. It may seem a cliché, but as the week’s roll on, the competition narrows, and positions within the top four become increasingly valuable for the clubs which hold finals aspirations.
Newcastle, currently in fourth position, will this weekend look to put a significant dent in the finals hopes of the Melbourne Victory – currently sitting in sixth place on 17 points – and in doing so, maintain their own battle to gain a third successive finals birth.
“We’re in for a very, very tough game against Melbourne,” head coach Gary Van Egmond said today.
“They’re still in with a possibility of making the top four; their chances are becoming diminished round-by-round and we need to ensure that we go down there with the right mindset and that the boys have got the right character to win the game.”

The Newcastle Jets have been defeated by Sydney FC 1-0 courtesy of an injury time goal to Steve Corica. The game was perhaps not one for the ages, but a 10-man Sydney side did enough to gain a valuable three points.
The Jets appeared to have an early penalty shout, however replays clearly showed that in the 8th minute Tarek Elrich was brought down in the box by a very good Robbie Middleby tackle. The former Novocastrian clearly won the ball in the challenge.
Opportunities were few and far between in the first half, with the travelling contingent of Jets fans having little to cheer about. They were brought to life by a piece of brilliance by Ante Covic in the 34th minute though, as the former Socceroo goalkeeper made a miraculous save from a Michael Bridges strike. Alex Brosque made a break down the left for Sydney and squared neatly for Bridges to finish, however Covic read the strike to perfection and somehow kept the ball out.

NEWCASTLE Jets captain Jade North has pleaded with the club to find a support runner for Joel Griffiths as the club’s play-offs hopes continue to hang in the balance.
"It’s really tough on Joel," North said.
"He’s the only one scoring and we need someone else to do it.
"The next three weeks on the road will determine our season. We have Queensland, Sydney and Melbourne in a row. Tough, eh?"
Jets coach Gary van Egmond is at loggerheads with owner Con Constantine and football director Remo Nogarotto for not delivering an attacking player.
There was talk that Colombian Milton Rodriguez was returning to the Jets and that Nogarotto had also been negotiating with two Italian players.
The Jets held A-League leaders Central Coast to a scoreless draw on Sunday and were lucky that other results went their way, meaning they remain fourth.
But they are likely to be without Olyroos striker Mark Bridge, who missed the game against the Mariners, for another three weeks, and also Jason Hoffman.

A second half brace from Matilda’s striker, Katie Gill, secured the Newcastle Jets Women’s team a 4-2 victory over the Sydney FC Women’s team at home yesterday.
It was to be Sydney who would open the scoring though, with Heather Garriock stunning the healthy home crowd with a strike in the 3rd minute of action.
Matilda’s star, Caitlin Munoz, then leveled matters on 15 with a stunning first time strike from all of 30 yards. It was a screamer which the Sydney goalkeeper could only watch hit the back of the net.
The Newcastle Jets and Central Coast fought out an entertaining scoreless draw in front of 14,169 fans here on Sunday, allowing the Mariners to stretch their lead to five points atop the A-League ladder.
Newcastle remained fourth.
Plenty of opportunities were created in the perfect conditions but neither side could break the dead-lock.
Mario Jardel may have earned another chance at starting for the Jets with his best performance in the A-League thus far.
