Craig Baumann, the state Liberal MP for Port Stephens, in the New South Wales Hunter region, says a lack of police presence is contributing to lawlessness on the Tiligerry Peninsula.
Residents held a meeting last night to consider possible solutions to the area’s crime problem.
Mr Baumann says policing in Port Stephens is stretched, because it falls within the Maitland-based lower Hunter area command, which has a huge area to cover.
"That’s 8,000 square kilometres and everybody knows at night there are only two vehicles to cover the area, so it really is a geographic problem," he said.
"We’ve been fighting very hard for and we hope to get a Port Stephens’ local area command, presumably based in Raymond Terrace, that will allow local police to look after the local community."

A Hunter Business Chamber survey of local business owners carried out after the storm showed 28% expected to take seven days or longer to return their business premises to normal, however Doug Parrish Chief Executive Officer of Hunter Business Chamber believes this is only one step in the process.

Local rocker Craig “Rosie” Rosevear is the driving force behind a music single and family concert day to pay tribute to, and raise funds for the volunteer and rescue services who worked so valiantly during the June long weekend storm.
Rosevear has recorded a stomping version of the aptly titled Rose Tattoo anthem “We Can’t Be Beaten” with a host of local music legends including Grant Walmsley (Screaming Jets).
A video for the song will be shot on Thursday 5 July at the Tighes Hill TAFE campus featuring local sporting identities, Ben Donaldson, Hunter Jaegers, Newcastle Jets, emergency, volunteers, Police and more, with editing to be done by Sticky Advertising at One80 Digital Post.
“We Can’t Be Beaten” is also the name for a free tribute concert Rosevear is organizing to say thanks to everyone who worked so hard to help the community during the storms and flooding.
The concert is slated for 22 July on the Newcastle Foreshore with a strong line-up of family and rock acts already committed.
Companion Credit Union has already signed on as major sponsor for the event with a generous donation to assist with the staging of the event.
The single will be available to purchase at Companion Credit Union branches throughout the region.
The video and concert details will be available to view online at huntersbest.com.au.
All funds raised from the single and concert will be donated to registered local rescue and aid charities.
Media are invited to cover the video shoot at Tighes Hill TAFE from 2pm Thursday 5 July 2007. Craig Rosevear is available for interviews to discuss the single and event.

The Wallsend Town Committee in Newcastle says buildings in the suburb may have to be demolished or undergo extensive repairs, while some businesses may never reopen after last month’s devastating floods.
The local business community on the New South Wales central coast, held a storm recovery meeting last night to look at ways to help local shops reopen their doors.
Committee chairman, Father Robert Catt, says an audit of local shops is currently being conducted to catalogue the extent of the damage.

NEWCASTLE has become one of the cheapest cities in the country for grocery shopping. But NSW is becoming more expensive, rising from the second cheapest state in 2003 to the fourth dearest, behind Tasmania, Western Australia and the Northern Territory.
Based on an analysis of 33 staple items in 111 supermarkets across 23 cities, the consumer watchdog organisation Choice found the cheapest deal at Coles in Prahran, Melbourne. The dearest supermarket of all was IGA in Dubbo West, where it cost an extra $27 for the same 33 items.
